Is Nintendo On The Path To Irrelevance?

Is Mario Too Irrelevant To Save The Wii U?

This is likely to be the last time i tackle this subject. Everyone likes to “Doom and Gloom” Nintendo and i for one am a little tired of the topic. Its time to bury the horse and move on.

Coming From The Founder Of Atari. Really? I Guess He Should Know

So the founder of Atari believes that Nintendo could become irrelevant. In an interview with the BBC, Nolan Bushnell said that Nintendo was in a “very difficult position”. Here’s what he had to say

“I don’t think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore, not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet.”

Here’s what i think. With over 33 million 3ds systems currently sold, I’m convinced that the “game-only device” is here to stay. That analogy is so tired. Look, people who buy tablets don’t buy them to exclusively play video games. People buy tablets to surf the web, to watch Netflix, to doodle on their drawing apps, to check their bank statement and what ever other convenience the tablet experience may offer. Guess what? That’s all fine and good but when people buy a gaming hand held they do it for one purpose. To play games. They don’t want to doodle. They don’t want to watch Netflix or go on Face Book. They want to play games. Real games. As long as the 3ds is selling an average of 150 thousand units a a month (give or take) and is currently the best selling gaming console on the market, tablet devices will not prove themselves a legit threat to Nintendo

The guy claiming that Nintendo is on its way to irrelevance is the same guy who founded a company that played a major role in the gaming crash of 1983. Let me ask you something. When is the last time you heard of Nintendo having to fill a landfill with 1 million Super Mario Bros. games because they didn’t sell?  My point is that Nintendo and Atari couldn’t be further apart. While the Wii U may not be selling well, Nintendo is STILL posting profit due to the great sales of the 3DS handheld. Oh yeah, lets not forget…The games are coming

How bout we revisit this topic in the spring of 2014 or sometime right around E3? Lets give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt and let them finish out 2013 with the amazing software they have lined up. We are looking at The legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3d World, and Sonic Lost World and that’s not even the full list of Wii U games releasing by years end. When you look at whats coming in early 2014 we have Bayonetta 2, Super Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros and lets not forget about Monoliths Studios “X” RPG game. So Nintendo has a very solid lineup of games coming out so lets take the wait and see approach before we give thema a final grade. If Wii U sales don’t pick up this holiday than the problem may be much bigger than we think but like i’d rather be optimistic and hope for the best. It seems like too many media outlets and journalist want Nintendo to fail. Not me.
